"Looking for a sign!"
By Bob Perks
I should know. I really have been doing
this for some time now. I guess 20 years.
So, why is it that I need a sign to remind me?
Every other week in my neighborhood we place
either recycled bottles and cans or paper
and cardboard out with our garbage.
The schedule is simply every other week.
Still, I can never remember which week is which.
As I drive into what is referred to as "Back Mountain,"
there is a sign along side the road that tells us
"This is bin week," or "This is paper week."
Wouldn't you think that I would just know?
Every week, just before our day, I make an effort to
look for the sign.
There was a period a few months ago when no one
changed the sign. It remained the same for more
than a month.
I had mixed emotions. I was confused, angry and
concerned. Confused because I didn't know what to do.
Angry because someone should have changed it!" Concerned because, after relying on that "someone"
for almost twenty years, I worried that something was wrong, perhaps something had happend to that "Someone."
Then, yesterday as I was driving home, I finally saw
the man who changed the sign.
I slowed down and thought about pulling over to tell
him how much I appreciate what he did.
"Should I do it?" I said out loud.
I didn't stop in time but took the opportunity to
turn around. This is a highway with a divider so you
need to exit, turn around, then exit again to head
back in that direction.
By the time I got back, the man was gone.
I pulled over in front of the sign and thought about
how many times in my life I looked for a sign to tell me what to do.
I was reminded that all too often I missed an
opportunity because I was looking for a sign. I knew
what to do, but lacked the confidence to do it.
Today I wanted to tell "someone" how much I
appreciated their efforts but missed the opportunity.
So, I wrote a note and placed it in the lower
right hand corner of that sign.
If you have been hesitating to move forward on a dream, say thanks to someone, or begin a new project, this may be the sign you've been looking for.
It says, "This is do it now week."
I need to put out the papers.
"I wish you enough!"
