Learn how to cope with depression. All of us, at one time or another, get down about something.
Have you ever been asked, "Are you depressed?" What does this mean? The word is often used lightly. Are you sad or feeling down about something? There are many different levels of depression. Clinical depression is serious, and could ultimately be life threatening. Clinical depression is defined as a mood disorder that manifests intense sadness, beyond what is normally expected. Symptoms can be both physical and emotional. The person is unable to function on a daily basis. They usually have insomnia or sleep all the time, anorexia, possible weight loss or they may overeat and gain weight, irritability, fears and anxieties, apathy, low self-esteem and trouble concentrating and carring out activities of daily living, such as working, cooking etc. They usually don't want to be around any family or friends. They may have suicidal thoughts.
Depression doesn't play favorites. It can effect all ages. In younger people, such as teenagers, depression can cause them to be irritable, rebellious, and even sexually perverse. No two people experience depression exactly the same. Symptoms, reactions, and actions may vary widely, and often it is hard for the person or family to identify that there is a problem.
Depression is usually brought on by some unfortunate life event, such as divorce or death, even moving away, or any stressful situation, such as peer pressure, school problems, problems in or loss of a relationship.
Depression must be acknowledged to be effectively treated. Like alcoholism, the person must admit that they are depressed. Depression is treated with medication and psychotherapy, which is counseling. If you know or suspect anyone to be suffering with clinical depression, don't hesitate. Get them the appropriate help needed. More and more people, especially adolescents are commiting suicide because of this ugly monster.
